MEMORIAL DAY: Tribute to Korean War Veterans

TRIBUTE TO KOREAN WAR VETERANS

Over 50 years ago, after the North Korean invasion, President Harry S. Truman announced that the United States, as part of a U.N. coalition, would use military force to preserve the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea. Some 5,700,000 Americans answered the call to duty to serve, and the Orland American Legion Post 423 wants to pay tribute to the local members that served our Country during that time.

Charter Members, Bob Keyes and Marlene Walter, of the Orland American Legion Post 423 joined forces with member Bob Kaplan to create a video tribute to the Korean War Veterans of Post 423. This touching tribute was created by interviewing 17 of the Post’s Korean Veterans. Each interview was video taped while the veterans shared their most touching memories of the war. With the help of Bob Kaplan’s son, Mark, and video equipment borrowed from Kevin Ziegman of Beckett Air, a tribute of tears, laughter and remembrance was created.

Stories of combat, injury, and friendship were told by the local men that served. This inspiring DVD will be sent to the Nation Archives in Washington D.C. for tribute, and to each member that participated. Bob Kaplan said, “Some stories were so touching and inspiring that it was difficult at times to keep it together.” “As a Korean veteran myself, that spent 4 years on submarines in the Bearing Straights, I thought my contribution was great, but after hearing the stories of combat from 16 other Post members I felt my contribution was small in comparison.” “Each veteran remarked that war is lousy, but if asked to do it again they all would. They all felt it was their duty to serve and protect.”

Because of their brave contribution the Orland American Legion Post 423 would like to thank and honor veterans of the Korean War and their families. The Post hopes that this DVD will pay tribute to the sacrifices and contributions made by our friends and neighbors during the Korean War, and highlight the role of the Armed Forces of the United States, then and now, in maintaining world peace through strength of character and courage.
